Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Steven Sanders with Cityview Chiropractic here in Fort Worth, and today we’re talking about something that affects a whole lot of people right now. Your home office setup. Whether you’ve been working from home for a few years or you just recently made the switch, the way you set up your workspace can make a huge difference in how your back, neck, and shoulders feel at the end of the day. Now, here’s the thing. Most people don’t realize they’re sitting in a way that’s slowly creating problems. They’re hunched forward, their screen is too low, their chair isn’t supporting them properly, and by three o’clock in the afternoon they’ve got a stiff neck, a tight lower back, and maybe even a headache creeping in. Sound familiar? You’re definitely not alone. So let me break this down for you. There are a few key things I want you to think about when it comes to setting up a spine-friendly workspace. Let’s start with your chair. This is the foundation of everything. You want your feet flat on the floor, your knees at about a ninety degree angle, and your hips pushed all the way back into the seat. If your chair has lumbar support, use it. Position it so it supports the natural curve in your lower back. If your chair doesn’t have built-in lumbar support, even a rolled-up towel placed behind your lower back can make a real difference. The goal here is to keep your spine in a neutral position, not slumped, not strained. Now let’s talk about your monitor. This is a big one. Your screen should be at eye level or just slightly below it. When your monitor is too low, you end up tilting your head down all day long. And over time, that forward head position puts a tremendous amount of extra load on your cervical spine. For every inch your head moves forward from neutral, the effective weight on your neck increases significantly. So if you’re looking down at a laptop on your desk all day, please consider getting a laptop stand, a separate keyboard, and a mouse. That small investment can save you a lot of discomfort down the road. Here’s what’s interesting. A lot of people come into our office and they’re convinced their pain is just from sleeping wrong, or from stress, or just getting older. And sometimes, when we dig into their daily routine, the real culprit is sitting at a poorly set up desk for six, eight, ten hours a day. Posture is cumulative. The small positions you hold for long periods of time add up in a big way. Now, here’s some practical advice you can start using today. Set a timer on your phone to go off every thirty to forty-five minutes. When it goes off, stand up, take a short walk around the room, do a few gentle neck rolls, maybe a shoulder shrug or two. Movement is medicine. Your spine is designed to move, and it does not love being held in one position for hours on end. Also, pay attention to where your phone is. If you’re cradling your phone between your ear and your shoulder during calls, that’s a quick way to create muscle tension and joint irritation on one side of your neck. Use a headset or the speaker when you can. And finally, let’s talk about getting evaluated. If you’re already dealing with neck pain, lower back tightness, headaches, or numbness and tingling in your arms or hands, those are signs your body is telling you something needs attention. Adjusting your workspace is a great first step, but sometimes the spine needs some hands-on care to get things moving properly again. That’s exactly what we do at Cityview Chiropractic. We look at the whole picture, your posture, your movement patterns, your lifestyle, and we help you build a plan to feel better and stay that way. If you’re in the Fort Worth area and you’d like to come in for an evaluation, we’d love to meet you. You can give us a call or visit our website to schedule an appointment. We make it easy to get started. Thanks so much for listening today. Take care of that spine. It’s the only one you’ve got. I’m Doctor Steven Sanders, and we’ll see you next time.
